Envelopes are the item most often left out of a stationery order and then bought separately in a hurry, which is how a business ends up posting a well-designed letterhead inside a plain white envelope with the address written by hand.

A printed envelope also does something a plain one cannot: it identifies the sender before the envelope is opened, which measurably affects whether business post gets opened at all.

Which envelope size fits an A4 letter?

A DL envelope (approximately 110 x 220 mm) takes an A4 sheet folded into three, which is the standard for business correspondence. A C5 envelope takes an A4 sheet folded once. A C4 or full A4 envelope takes the sheet flat, which is what you need for documents that must not be creased — certificates, contracts and tender submissions.

If the envelope will be machine-fed or window-addressed, the window position has to line up with the address block on your letterhead. It is worth checking that alignment before printing either item.

How this is priced

Envelope cost depends on size, paper, number of print colours and quantity. Single-colour printing on a standard white envelope is the most economical option and suits most business use; full-colour and cloth-lined envelopes cost more.

DL, approximately 110 x 220 mm, which takes an A4 letter folded into three. It is the default for business correspondence.

They save time on any mailing where the address is already printed on the letter, such as statements and invoices. The window has to align with the address block on your letterhead, so both should be planned together.

Yes. The reverse flap is commonly used for the return address or a short brand line, and it costs less than adding a second colour to the front.

A4 or C4, so the certificate stays flat. Cloth-lined is worth the extra for anything that would be spoiled by a crease or a tear in transit.
