Vehicle branding is unusually effective in Mumbai for a simple reason: the traffic. A branded vehicle sits in front of the same commuters and shopfronts for far longer than it would in a city that moves quickly. But there are several things worth understanding before committing.
Cast versus calendered vinyl
This is the biggest quality variable and the one most quotations leave unstated. Cast vinyl is thinner, conforms well to curves and recesses, and lasts considerably longer. Calendered vinyl is cheaper, works fine on flat panels, and shrinks and fails sooner in direct sun.
A UV-protective overlaminate over the print is not optional on a vehicle. Without it, colours fade noticeably within a season of Mumbai sun.
Ask any supplier to state the film grade in the quotation. A quote that does not mention it is usually quoting the cheaper option.
Will it damage the paint?
Quality vinyl applied to original factory paint is designed to be removable, and it generally protects the surface underneath from sun and minor abrasion. Problems come from three places: poor-quality film, panels that have been repainted after an accident, and removal done cold rather than with heat.
If a vehicle has repainted panels, say so before quoting. Aftermarket paint does not always bond as reliably as factory paint, and removal carries more risk.
How much of the vehicle to brand
Less than most people assume. On a car, the front doors and the rear windscreen are what actually get read — both are at eye level and both are visible when stationary in traffic. Bonnet and roof branding is seen by almost nobody at street level.
A clean partial wrap with a legible name and phone number usually outperforms a busy full wrap. The most common design mistake is putting too much information on a surface people have three seconds to read.
What drives the cost
- Coverage — decals, partial wrap or full wrap.
- Film grade — cast costs more than calendered and lasts longer.
- Vehicle shape — deep recesses, bumpers and complex curves take far more labour than flat van panels.
- Panel condition — dents show through vinyl, and damaged surfaces affect adhesion.
Because of the last two, a proper quotation needs to see the vehicle, or at least photographs from all sides.
Fleet economics
Branding ten identical vehicles costs far less per vehicle than ten separate one-off jobs, because the design adaptation is a one-time cost spread across the fleet. If you expect to add vehicles later, ask for the livery to be documented as a specification so replacements match.
The regulatory question
Rules on advertising on vehicles differ by vehicle category — private, commercial, taxi, auto, bus — and by route and jurisdiction, and they change over time. This is not something to take on trust from a supplier.
Before committing to a campaign, confirm the current position for your specific vehicle category with the relevant transport or municipal authority, or with the fleet operator if you are branding vehicles you do not own.
Aftercare
Hand washing is best. High-pressure jets aimed directly at edges and seams are the most common cause of lifting, and parking in permanent direct afternoon sun shortens the life of any wrap.
